Vitamin E, not cholesterol called top predictor of heart disease

Cholesterol worriers, take note that an even greater danger maybe too little vitamin E in your blood. So suggests a new studyreleased by the World Health Organization.

A research team, led by K. Fred Gey at Switzerland's Instituteof Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, analyzed the blood of 100middle-aged men from 16 European cities. Then they compared theblood with local death rates from heart disease.

Surprisingly, high cholesterol did not surface as the No. 1threat. Both cholesterol and high blood pressure showed only a"moderate" link to fatal heart disease. The strongest indicator wasa low level of vitamin E in the blood. Indeed, researchers said theycould …
