Vic: Inaugural flight Air Canada flight leaves Melbourne

Air Canada's inaugural flight from Melbourne to Toronto has left Melbourne almost two
hours behind schedule.

Fire trucks turned on a water arch for the aircraft, due to take off from Melbourne
International Airport at 9am (AEDT).

But the plane, which arrived half an hour late from Toronto, had to turn back because
it was found to be overweight.

Air Canada is defying the international air travel downturn, with the introduction
of three services a week between Melbourne and Toronto.

Air Canada spokeswoman JEANNIE FOSTER says the plans were reviewed after the September
11 terrorist attacks on the US but the favourable Australian dollar kept them on track.
