* Long-term effects include impaired physical and sensory abilities

* Patients can show changes in behaviour, personality and communication

* People can have head injuries without injuring the brain

* The brain can be injured with little or no visible injury to the head

* Brain swelling and bleeding can cause further damage

* Over 500,000 Australians have an acquired brain injury

* Most are men and aged under 65
